Investment Forums in South Asia

Overview

Renewable energy sources are abundant across South Asia, with hydropower and biomass, as well as solar and wind energy, providing vast untapped potential. Governments in the region have provided strong policy support for renewables, aiming to foster socio-economic development, achieve climate goals and expand access to modern, reliable and affordable energy.

Across South Asia, local households, communities and micro, small, and medium enterprises form the backbone of the economy, providing employment and supporting livelihoods for hundreds of millions of people. Renewable sources are crucial to enable economic development, meet growing energy demand, and extend modern energy services even in remote mountain areas.

The South Asia Investment Forum aims to scale up renewable energy investments in the region, support project development and implementation, and contribute to the creation of policy and regulatory frameworks conducive to renewable energy investments.

The regional forum is part of IRENA’s contribution to the Climate Investment Platform (CIP), which aims to advance sustainable energy projects to investment maturity and facilitate their access to finance.

Key forum activities include matchmaking between projects, project developers, and potential financiers and investors. Renewable energy projects, along with renewable-based electricity grid and energy efficiency projects, may be considered for support.
