Scaling-up renewable energy in Southeast Asia: Insights from IRENA’s Regional Market Analysis

Southeast Asia is a region characterised by strong economic growth, rising energy demands and growing environmental and energy security challenges. The region is also characterised by diversity of economies, energy sector structures and natural resource endowment. In this context, most Southeast Asian countries have announced renewable energy targets and taken measures to support the development of renewables, both on-grid and off-grid. The region offers rich experiences in renewable energy policy design and adaptation, investment promotion, project facilitation and local industry development. Countries in the region also provide examples of renewable energy technologies as tools for socio-economic development in rural areas and island contexts.

This side-event at the Global SDG 7 Conference in Bangkok, marked the regional launch of IRENA's Southeast Asia Market Analysis, and presented its findings. A panel discussion discussed measures to scale renewable energy deployment to meet national and regional goals, and targets associated with SDG 7.
