Regional Renewable Energy Policy Support Mechanism Workshop for Southeast Asia

One of the areas of cooperation under the ASEAN-IRENA Memorandum of Understanding is to support the renewable energy policy and regulatory frameworks for ASEAN. As a kick-off activity to initiate implementation of the cooperation, IRENA and the ASEAN Centre for Energy conducted a two-day workshop on Renewable Energy Policy Support Mechanisms. The workshop supported the efforts of ASEAN Member States to move towards competitive renewable energy markets, and provided a knowledge sharing platform among policy makers and related key experts of the region and beyond.

The workshop was hosted by Ministry of Energy Science, Technology, Environment and Climate Change (MESTEEC) and jointly organised with ASEAN Centre for Energy (ACE). Participants included around 40 representatives from energy ministry, utility, regulator, and other related agencies from ASEAN Member States, as well as representatives from development partners, international organisations, financial institutions, investors and project developers.

The workshop resulted in policy exchanges and in-depth discussions as an input for ASEAN Member States to formulate appropriate actions on renewable energy policy, financing and investment and competitive renewables market mechanism, including RE auctions.

The 10 countries included in the regional initiative are: Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam.
