Fourth meeting of the Collaborative Framework on the Geopolitics of Energy Transformation

In 2020, the Collaborative Framework on the Geopolitics of Energy Transformation agreed that the topic of geopolitics of hydrogen would be one of the two workstreams for the first year of work. As such, IRENA has been mandated to produce a relevant report.

Co-facilitated by the UAE and Germany, the fourth virtual meeting of the Collaborative Framework on the Geopolitics of Energy Transformation was attended by 30 Members and States in Accession (74 participants) as well as several experts on geopolitics.

IRENA presented an overview of the geopolitics of hydrogen report. Among others, it noted that the report will consider the hydrogen developments based on IRENA’s WETO 2050 pathway. It will align the geopolitical dimensions of hydrogen with issues highlighted in the report of IRENA’s Commission on the Geopolitics of the Energy Transformation, such as technology leadership, state interdependence, and energy security among others. An overview of the key findings from IRENA’s country survey that was conducted over the summer was shared, which guided the subsequent discussion from the group.

In the context of the next stage of the geopolitics work, participants were invited to provide their feedback on possible deep dives for 2022. The Co-facilitators will work with the Secretariat to prepare the proposal for the work plan for the next meeting.
