Modelling Renewables in PSSE for Power System Studies

As part of the technical support provided under IRENA’s Clean Energy Corridor of Central America (CECCA) initiative, the Agency held a training, in partnership with GIZ and in collaboration with the Regional Operator Entity (EOR) of Central America, for national power system operators and officials in the region. The aim of the training was to build capacity in the areas of planning, operating and maintaining power systems with higher shares of variable renewable energy (VRE). This 4-day course provided deep technical discussions on the underlying concepts and parameters of VRE models for grid studies and their specific applications in Central America.

The event took place in El Salvador and covered the fundamentals of renewable energy technologies with a focus on solar PV and wind energy; the typical behaviour of VRE connected to electricity systems; the main barriers and best practices for VRE integration in interconnected electricity systems; concepts for wind farm and solar PV park modelling; and concepts for renewable generation modelling for network planning studies.
