International Energy Workshop (IEW) 2024

Welcome to the webpage of the 42nd edition of the International Energy Workshop (IEW), which will be hosted by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) in Bonn, Germany, on 26-28 June, 2024. IRENA is reprising its role as host in Abu Dhabi in 2015.

The IEW is a leading conference for the international energy modelling community. In a world of environmental and economic constraints, energy modelling is an increasingly important tool for addressing the complexity of energy planning and policy making. The IEW provides a venue for scholars and researchers to compare modelling tools, to discuss modelling advances for emerging energy sector issues, and to observe new trends in the global energy sector.

The IEW features plenary sessions (mornings) and parallel sessions (afternoons). This year’s plenary sessions feature three key themes and nine keynote speakers. During the parallel sessions over 100 papers will be presented. The call for papers was closed on February 1st, 2024. The selected papers will cover a range of topics including, but not limited to: Reaching net-zero emissions and climate neutrality; Role of renewable energy in the energy transition; Energy access and transition in developing countries; Socio-economic analysis of the energy transition; and Climate resilience of energy systems.

  • More to be announced

The next IEA-ETSAP workshop will take place back-to-back with IEW 2024, on 24th – 25th June 2024 in Bonn, Germany, at the IRENA Innovation and Technology Centre:

Participation in the ETSAP workshop is open to all interested in energy systems modelling and free to attend. There is also an option for presentations – if you want to present your work, please include the presentation title and abstract when you register, and we will consider including your contribution in our programme. Please note the deadline for the submission of abstracts for presentations in the workshop is the 31st of May 2023. The program and presentations from previous workshops are available at the ETSAP webpage: Workshops (iea-etsap.org).

ETSAP is a Technology Collaboration Program of the International Energy Agency (IEA). ETSAP functions as a consortium of member country teams and invited teams that actively cooperate to establish, maintain, and expand energy-economy-environment-engineering modelling capability. Its backbone consists of a common methodology, mainly based on the MARKAL/TIMES family of models, permitting the compilation of long-term energy scenarios and in-depth national, multi-country, and global energy and environmental scenario analyses.

The European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) will be holding a workshop back-to-back with IEW 2024, the afternoon of 25th June 2024 in Bonn, Germany, at the IRENA Innovation and Technology Centre:

Environmental data supporting energy policies

Ensuring secure, sustainable, and affordable energy for citizens and businesses, as prioritised in international policies, relies heavily on access to accurate weather, atmospheric, climate and emissions data. These data are crucial for steering strategies and interventions towards achieving net-zero emissions and climate neutrality goals for a sustainable future, but they also play an important role in transitioning to renewable energy and integrating it into the grid.

For decades, ECMWF has played a pivotal role in advancing Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) and its applications across various sectors, including energy. By providing accurate and reliable forecasts, ECMWF has enabled the energy sector to make informed decisions on energy production, distribution, and integration of renewable energy sources.

In recent years, ECMWF, including the Copernicus Services (C3S and CAMS), has offered an increasing/growing volume of environmental data spanning past, present, and short to medium-term forecasts, along with future climate projections. C3S reanalysis data are currently used operationally by IRENA, the renewable energy industry, the Electricity Transmission System Operators (TSOs) in cooperation with ENTSO-E and will bring further opportunities emerging from the financial and other key players in the energy sector, both nationally and internationally.

In parallel, key products for the solar energy sector, including forecasts of solar radiation can be used by the renewable energy industry. The progress done toward the net-zero emission via the monitoring and forecasting of atmospheric concentrations and surface deposition fluxes of air pollutants, greenhouse gases and CO2.

All Copernicus data and some of ECMWF data are free and open access.

This workshop is structured into three discussion areas, focusing on the following specific topics:

Area 1: Exploring ECMWF's provision of information for climate resilience, energy security and net-zero emission.

Participants will be given the opportunity to better understand the ECMWF and Copernicus offer and they will be able to express their needs of environmental data.

Area 2: Hands-on ECMWF data session, interactive data training exercises.

Participants will engage in interactive data training exercises, gaining hands-on experience with ECMWF and Copernicus data products. This session aims to demonstrate the practical applications of forecasts, reanalysis and projections in the energy sector, from daily operational use to long-term planning and climate impact assessments.

Area 3: A new interface: introduction to the Copernicus Energy Hub (CEH).

The Copernicus Energy Hub has much more to offer than ECMWF data only, established in the more general scope of the Copernicus Programme it provides access to more data and expertise. By interacting with the CEH the industry and practitioners are given the opportunity to directly influence the future development of the Copernicus programme.

This area will be in free access, the participants can interact directly with ECMWF and Copernicus experts. Informative material as posters will be exposed.
