High-Level Public-Private Dialogue: Building Momentum Towards a 100% Renewable Energy System Part 2

In the next crucial decade, limiting global temperature rise to 1.5°C depends on swift action to fully decarbonise the energy system, implement robust energy efficiency measures, strengthen energy infrastructure and electrify end-use sectors. Despite numerous calls for action and climate warnings, the energy transition lags, leading to soaring emissions.

IRENA's World Energy Transitions Outlook 2023 underscores the urgent need to triple installed capacity and double energy efficiency intensity by 2030 to meet the Paris Climate objectives. At COP28, over 130 governments made ambitious commitments to triple renewable power and double energy efficiency by 2030. The roadmap to achieve this was further developed by COP28 Presidency, IRENA, and the Global Renewables Alliance in their report: "Tripling Renewable Power and Doubling Energy Efficiency by 2030: Crucial Steps towards 1.5°C."

Building upon these commitments, the IRENA Coalition for Action, IRENA’s most established and diverse Partnership Initiative comprising over 150 non-governmental stakeholders, emphasizes the need for a comprehensive transition to a fully renewable energy-powered system by mid-century. Its publication, "100% Renewable Energy Scenarios – Supporting Ambitious Policy Targets", provides crucial recommendations that should be implemented today to pave the way for a more equitable and sustainable world.

It is against this background that the 14th Session of the IRENA Assembly convened a High-Level Public-Private Dialogue on "Building Momentum Towards a 100% Renewable Energy System" on April 16, 2024, by IRENA’s Coalition for Action – convening a global dialogue amongst non-governmental and governmental stakeholders to develop actions to increasing the share of renewables in the global energy mix.

Amidst urgent calls for action to limit global temperature rise to 1.5°C, distinguished speakers and guests were reminded of the urgent need for action as the Dialogue was impacted by unprecedented flooding on the 16th of April. As the Coalition, we feel it imperative to conclude the Dialogue which offers a multi-stakeholder platform for leaders from governments, global industry, and civil society to engage and to delve deeper into the required actions, innovative pathways, and comprehensive roadmaps and build on the momentum of the UAE Consensus from COP28 towards a 100% renewable energy system by mid-century.

To this end, the Dialogue (Part 2) will conclude virtually on May 7th, 2024, 14:00 – 15:00 GST. Part 2 will offer an opportunity for those invited speakers who were unable to share their insights due to the flooding. Their insights will be combined with those who participated in Part 1 on the 16th of April, which included Government, Legislators, and Youth Representatives, to produce a comprehensive and holistic outcome from the Dialogue and further drive the work of the Coalition for Action.

Attendance is by invitation only. For further information please contact coalition@irena.org.
