National strategies and development decisions designed to address climate change can be strengthened greatly through plans for deployment of renewable energy technologies.

At the same time, Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Actions (NAMAs) can play a central role in creating an enabling environment for widespread renewable energy deployment. But to work effectively, NAMAs need to match existing domestic regulations and be in line with national priorities. As NAMA development gains momentum, countries are increasingly shifting their focus towards financing, where NAMAs can allow access to new sources of financial support.

IRENA’s updated handbook advises policy makers and NAMA developers on how to develop successful NAMAs that deploy renewable energy in the battle against climate change.

The first edition was published in November 2012.
