FlexTool national studies

About

National flexibility assessments demonstrate the application of the IRENA FlexTool in existing real-world situations.

IRENA has completed assessments for:

After completion of the study for Uruguay, the country requested a follow-up assessment to allow IRENA to identify opportunities to enhance its energy-related nationally determined contributions under the Paris Agreement. The study focused on the challenges the system faces today, such as electricity curtailment, and identified opportunities to solve them with electric vehicles and green hydrogen.

Country assessments are under development for:

  • Indonesia
  • Malaysia

Flexible generation, stronger transmission and distribution systems, increased storage capacity and demand-side management all help to boost system flexibility, as do renewables-based heat and production of hydrogen. Increased flexibility should also contribute to long-term decarbonisation, which is essential for a sustainable energy future.
