The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) is pleased to welcome for the second academic year, its new scholars to the IRENA Scholarship Programme at Masdar Institute for Science and Technology, Abu Dhabi.

Franklyn Kanyako from Sierra Leone highlighted:

“I am very impressed with IRENA and its work, encouraging governments to invest in renewable energy technologies and assisting private companies to find qualified skilled personnel to work in the renewable energy sector. As an African, I am particularly concerned as 60% of the people living in Sub-Saharan Africa lack access to energy. This challenge can only be remedied by increased use of renewable energies. I am proud to be part of this undertaking as an IRENA scholar.”

Abdul Mannan Rauf from Pakistan said:

“While I was preparing to apply to Masdar Institute, I came across the IRENA Scholarship Programme. I learned that IRENA, being an international agency, is centre stage and can act first-hand as a source for me to connect with renewable energy companies, learning more about the worldwide industrial barriers to implementing large scale renewable energies. I feel honored to be member of the IRENA family and I am sure that the experience I will gain from IRENA/Masdar will help me raise awareness and pave the way for renewable energy growth in Pakistan.”

Natalia Zurita from Argentina said:

“IRENA represents part of a great international effort to address the sustainability challenge. I wanted to be part of the IRENA Scholarship Programme for all the benefits it brings in terms of networking opportunities and the unique learning experiences. The renewable energy sector is growing and gaining force and this process should be carried out with care. I would like to help ensure that the development of the sector will be economically viable. Being an IRENA scholar will allow me to take charge of this great responsibility while keeping up to IRENA’s high standards.”

Charalambos Konstantinou from Cyprus emphasized:

“At a time of economic uncertainty, the renewable energy industry keeps on growing, providing jobs and developing new technologies. I applied for the IRENA Scholarship Programme because it is offered by one of the most innovative and important organisations in the renewable energy sector. As an IRENA scholar I will gain the intellectual and practical experience that I need to boost my career and become a successful professional within the renewable energy field.”

The IRENA Scholarship Programme benefits from the generous support of the Government of the United Arab Emirates, which awards 20 scholarships annually to highly-accomplished and promising applicants. Scholarship students can select one of eight Master of Science Programmes taught at the Abu Dhabi-based Masdar Institute of Science and Technology (MI). These new IRENA Scholars, alongside those selected in the previous academic year, will receive first-hand information on renewable energy topics from world-renowned energy experts and will also gain a unique opportunity to join the growing network of renewable energy professionals.

IRENA scholars have varied nationalities, 80% of whom represent developing countries. This year the scholars are from the U.S.A., Argentina, China, Cyprus, Egypt, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Finland, Greece, Jordan, Nepal, Nigeria, Pakistan, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Sri Lanka, and the U.A.E.

The application process for the IRENA Scholarship Programme for the academic year 2013-2015 closed on 31 May, 2013. Applications for 2014-2016 can be submitted as of 1 November, 2013. For more information on IRENA or on the IRENA Scholarship Programme, please contact scholars@irena.org.
